Paris Hackers #8

Went to their meetup.
Presentations were very interesting. Topics ranged from 'What's new in C++11' to 'Machine learning for Starcraft AI' and 'Life at TechStars'.
Met some interesting people and had a great evening in general. Highly recommend it: http://www.meetup.com/ParisHackers/

Play Framework: Deploying App with PostgreSQL database to Heroku
Note to self:
  • Add "postgresql" % "postgresql" % "9.1-901-1.jdbc4" to Build.scala's appdependencies function
  • To hook up a PostgreSQL db locally, download, install and run the PostgreSQL app first
  • Create a database via the PostgreSQL console
  • Next, enter the following two lines to application.conf:
    db.default.driver=org.postgresql.Driver
    db.default.url="postgres://user_name:password@localhost/database_name"
    You can find out the user_name via the PostgreSQL console
  • Before deploying to Heroku, create a file named Procfile in the root directory of your app
  • The Procfile needs to contain web: target/start -Dhttp.port=${PORT} -DapplyEvolutions.default=true -Ddb.default.driver=org.postgresql.Driver -Ddb.default.url=$DATABASE_URL ${JAVA_OPTS}
  • git add the Procfile and commit your changes
  • git push heroku master to deploy the app
  • When seeing errors like "Caused by: org.postgresql.util.PSQLException: Connection refused. Check that the hostname and port are correct and that the postmaster is accepting TCP/IP connections.", make sure Heroku's Procfile has been added to the branch.
